Hawaiian Stilts (Ae‘o)

Endangered Bird Monitoring & Habitat Enhancement at Ocean Pointe

PSI has monitored the endangered Hawaiian Stilt (Himantopus mexicanus knudseni), Hawaiian Coot (Fulica alai), and Hawaiian Duck (Anas wyvilliana) on the Ocean Pointe property for several years. In 2005, PSI assisted with the creation of a habitat “island” for Hawaiian Stilts in the Wetland Preservation Area on the west end of the property. The island provides protection from most predators and has become a favored locale for stilts and other birds. PSI also prepared educational materials for the construction workers at the site.
